Biking Plans

March 31st, 2009 (08:37 pm)
busy

current mood: busy

So my recumbent's in the shop getting a tune-up, and I've been browsing one of my favorite map sites (maps.live.com) and checking out the Bird's Eye View to find old abandoney places to bike to. I stumbled across what appears to be an abandoned farm on Evergreen Mill Road. So that might be something worth checking out at some point.

A little ways South, across Route 50, I found a row of five identical very abandoned-looking houses on Goshen Road. Definitely worth a look.

In other news, I'll be biking the entire length of the C&O Canal (184 miles) sometime this year. It should be a lot of fun!

Heh, you look at it and think "neat place to explore." I look at it and think "I wonder if that house is salvageable..."

FAAAAACE!

I look it and think about that episode of the X-Files with that mutant hillbilly family.

I have cousins who resemble those folk. Seriously.

Have you ever been to the "East Broad-Top Railroad"? Slightly west of central Pennsylvania. It has quite the network of abandoned buildings, railroads, tunnels and such. They still have a short part of it running as a tourist attraction.

What really got me was finding abandoned coal hopper cars with trees a good 6-8 inches in diameter growing through them!

I've heard of East Broad Top Railroad, but haven't actually been there (yet).

Will you be doing the Canal all in one day? That would be a hugely impressive accomplishment!

I don't seem to find all that many abandoned buildings/houses around I wonder if it is because they are torn down to be developed, or because there is harsher weather here that makes them not last as long.

The current plan is to spread the trip out over 4 days.

The paths there look pretty well worn for "abandoned". Maybe the farm's no longer working and someone still lives in the house bottom-right?

Tsuki and I are probably going to do the Tour de Canal later on this year. We tried last year but it was rained out due to hurricane weather.

I'm pretty sure we're not doing the 184 miles this year because we're wussies but perhaps you would because you're full of awesome!!! ^___^

Anyways, here's a link to it if you're interested: http://www.alz.org/nca/in_my_community_10403.asp

C&O is a good goal.
I've been doing it 20 to 30 miles at a time.

Why not make it a real trip. Go to Pittsburgh and do the Youghiogheny River, Allegheny Highland and C&O trifecta.

Perhaps I will work up to that. This is my first time bike camping since I was in high school.

I'm going to be going on a bike camping trip for the first time this summer, probably in June. Any advice?

Alas, I haven't been bike camping in pretty much forever (last time was when I was in high school, IIRC) so I'm pretty much new at it myself.
