The problem for me, is that growing up in central Illinois but having parents from far southern Illinois, I vary in what I call things. Sometimes it's a stream, sometimes a creek (pronounced crick, of course. :). Sometimes firefly, sometimes lightning bug, etc. Ditto bags and sacks, etc, etc.

I guess I'm just from everywhere and nowhere at all. ;)

Whinnyhi.

I just did this one with Tivo. Most things we call the same but the sandwich one is kinda interesting. I always called them hoagie or grinder, which is supposedly an East Coast thing, yet I am mostly from LA growing up and that is what they were called. It was not until I got to the East Coast that I heard submarine or subway or sub, which is where Subway Sandwich and Salad Shop originated I think (pictures on the wall of some restaurants depict East Coast citys and subways. No subways on the West Coast. Weird.

I figured a Brit would call the shopping cart a trolley. Really, no fireflys in GB? They practically infect the East and Midwest US in late Summer but only for a few weeks. Fun to go out into the fields at night they are everywhere flashing and blinking. Dinner was called Tea? Kinda figures. To me, Supper was an early dinner between lunch and dinner. There was also brunch, a late breakfast.

My mom grew up in Colorado and still calls a creek a crick. Dad, from upstate NY, a stream.

Figure just about everybody who speaks English calls a horse a horse. Caballo, Pferd are the only others I know other than Caballus or Hippos.

"Wedge" was the only dialect conflict I encountered when I moved to VA. I asked someone for turkey and cheese on a wedge and they had no idea what I was talking about. Down here they call them subs.

Also: I noticed on that dialect website years ago "basketball bug" was pretty much limited to the New York City area where I grew up.
